Linda and Frank have been dating for four-and-a-half years. They met while taking the same cultural anthropology class at a medium size, country, Church affiliated liberal arts college located in the Northern part of the United States. While they were for the most part good friends at first, they eventually started to date when they were in their third year of college.

Due to the fact both of them came from very "old school" backgrounds, neither one of them drank very much beyond the casual drinking stage when they first began dating. As the time went by, however, they began to go to more happy hours, keg parties, sorority and fraternity parties, and football bashes. Consequently, they slowly but surely began to drink increasingly more the longer they saw one another in a dating capacity.

After they graduated from college, they both landed jobs in a small city located around sixty miles from their undergraduate college. Then they eventually decided to move in with each other.

With any big adjustment in an individual's life there is usually something that sets off the particular change in question. For Linda and Frank the idea of having children and buying a new house was this "change agent." In a word, for the first time in their lives, Frank and Linda started to critically review their irresponsible drinking and the alcohol long term effects on their health. As an example, they began to wonder if they would ever experience an alcohol overdose due to their heavy and irresponsible drinking.

Would their abusive and excessive drinking unfavorably affect their ability to have children? How would they be able to continue spending nearly all of their money on drinking if they were to begin saving for a new house?

From a different viewpoint, although neither one of them ever suffered from alcohol poisoning, received a DUI, or experienced alcohol poisoning symptoms, they realized that their excessive drinking was becoming a thorny issue that they could not discount any longer. All of these uncertainties plainly led to the same conclusion, namely that Linda and Frank needed to understand that they couldn't continue their excessive drinking if their plans, dreams, and hopes were to be accomplished.

Once they got to this conclusion, they alerted their drinking pals about their their plans to start a family, about their marital plans, and about their goal of buying or building a new house. They also told their drinking friends that they still wanted to associate with them but that they would be drinking in strict moderation from this point forward so that they could begin realizing their future aspirations, goals, and dreams.

Much to their disbelief, all of their buddies expressed relief because they too had been deliberating on their lives and concluded that their life-styles were much too often centered around drinking. They also felt that they would have to change significantly if they were to become more responsible and display more consideration for their aspirations, their health, and for their careers in the next twenty or twenty-five years.

After their heart-to-heart chat with their pals about their aspirations, goals, and dreams, Linda and Frank actually started to have more meaningful relationships with all of their buddies. The key reason for this was the fact that all of them had a similar attitude regarding their heavy and irresponsible drinking and their relatively short and long-term aspirations, plans, and goals.
