The reason why dog lovers hold this preconceived idea that small breed dogs are more challenging to condition than medium sized or large breed puppies, I will never be able to understand. Housebreaking a puppy, despite its size should never be a problem.
Small dog training, is in no way different from training a puppy dog of any other sized breed. Whilst training any dog will have its peculiarities, related to its breed, almost all other aspects remain identical, and the approach to training the pup should be the same, irrespective its size.
With that said, I will stray from the rule here, and agrree that small dog training may create problems in two arenas, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy crate training. However, this is not because the size of the breed is small, but in all case studies, because of the owner.
If a tiny breed pup is aggressive and is hard to train, or if a smaller breed dog cannot be potty trained or poses challenges in being potty trained, it is the owner who has unknowingly contributed to this dilemma. Let us look at how and why.
Aggression.
Tiny dogs are enjoyed because they are pretty, they are like toy characters. Owners enjoy having their puppy sit on their laps. This indulgence is where the difficulty gets going. The innate aggressive characteristic of the puppy, is to assert ownership over its space, its food, even its master; all puppies want to be the alpha dog.
It is the hostile streak in the pup that makes it to jump on to the lap of its mistress, particularly when there are plenty of people seated in the room.
This is a blatant act of violence. Instead of reprimanding the dog, every owner bar none, would hug the pup, even though it jumped on to their lap unbeckoned, fostering the aggressive streak in the animal. By doing this the owner has seconded the pooch's behavioral instinct to be the alpha dog.
Growling and getting upset at a bigger dog is another obvious act of aggression. To the owner, and even the people nearby, this is looked on as cute, just because one dog is very small while the other is bigger. Most owners pet and pat the pup instead of checking it, when it exhibits this aggression against a larger dog.
These are but examples as to why small breed pups are aggressive, and it s not because small dog training is different or difficult.
Potty Training.
Owners have a propensity to lug their small dogs around where ever they are, even at home and that makes it practically impossible to toilet train them
It is as a reflex action that the owners of small dogs to lug the animal to the place where the pup should do its dirty business and then lug it back into the house.
It is this habit of carrying the pooch to the place where is should do its business that is the origin of all dilemmas. In addition, ever since the pup is by and large carried around so often it has no way of it indicating to or notifying the owner that it has to go the toilet.
Small dog training commences with treating the dog as any other sized dog. They have to be moved to their pooping area on a leash. If owners discontinue carrying their small sized dogs they would have no obstacles in training them.
Dog crate training, is the best part of pup training, and so it should be, even in Small Dog Training.
